NENSA News:

Winter 2002 NENSA News

 Who we are:

NENSA/ Fleet 154 is an open catamaran organization covering all of New England consisting of owners, crews and catamaran dreamers no matter what type of catamaran they own or sail on.  Although our membership is predominantly owners of Performance Inc built catamarans, all are welcome.  You don’t need a to own boat to join.

Year 2001

Well, Year 2001 is a wrap.  It was a successful year for NENSA.  The NACRA 6.0 fleet continues to grow with the addition of several new members.  This year, Ken Deming, Rick Bliss, Greg Harwood, and myself bought new 6.0’s.  The fleet is up to about 24 boats.  The Inter 20 fleet has finally reached critical mass and was able to race One-Design most of the summer.    The Inter 18’s are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the open class.  Marc Marzialo just bought a new lime green Inter 17R.

NENSA ran 4 events this season.  The first was the Sakonnet challenge.  This was a buoy’s race on the Sakonnet River in Newport RI in early July.  Rick Bliss was the PRO for the event.  The event featured awesome trophies by Nora Zelmer and a dinner at the Coddington Brewery.    The second event of the year was the New Port 100.  This was a 2-day distance race around Aquidneck Island (and a few other Islands) on Saturday and around Aquidneck on Sunday.  Joe and Jen Hamway ran the show.  The third event was the New England 100.  The New England 100 is New England’s Premier distance race.  This year’s event had 23 boats participating including 19 spinnaker cats. Additionally, the Nacra 6.0 spinnaker class and Inter 20 class had one design fleets at the event.  Cash Prizes of 250$ were given to the winner of the spinnaker and non-spinnaker class.  The event also featured an awesome Steak dinner catered by Vaillancourt’s Market, all the beer you could drink, and a rocking surf band called 9th wave. The fourth event was the Area A Alter Cup, run by Jim Zellmer.  The winner was Joe Hamwey and JJ Moore on a Nacra 6.0.  The runner up was Andy Estathiou on a Hobie 17.

In addition to events in Division 12, NENSA Members traveled to the Chesapeake 100, Stature of Liberty Race, and the Nacra Nationals.  Garrett Norton took line honors in the Statue of Liberty Race with 2 other Nensa members 2nd and 4th to the beach.  Rick Bliss and Nora Zelmer won the Nacra 6.0 Nationals, Garrett Norton and Bob Burkstead finished second.

2002 Schedule

Enclosed is the 2002 NENSA/Fleet 154 Schedule

Next Year’s schedule is mostly finalized.  NENSA will run the Sakonnet Challenge on June 8-9 at Sandy Point, Portsmouth.   We still need volunteers to help run the Regatta.  Now is the time to ask your friends who have powerboats if they would help us out for the weekend.  Contact Rick Bliss about helping for the Sakonnet Chalenge or New England 100.

July 20-21 is the New England 100. The location will stay the same as last year.  We will again be giving cash prizes of $250.  This year we will stop over at Quonset Point again.  We are going to throw a combined party with fleet 448 Saturday night.  We expect to have a live band, beer, and steak dinner.

At the fall Nensa meeting, it was decided to return the Newport 100 back to the old Around Newport race.  This is a 1-day race around Aquidneck Island.  The date has not been set for this race yet.

The date for the Area A Alter Cup qualifiers has not be set yet.  It is tentatively schedualed for one of CRANNE’s Sebago Regattas.   Contact Jim Zelmer at (802) 387-5948 to participate or help out.

This Years elections were held the week before the Division 12 Meeting.  The following officers were elected:

Commodore: Eric Anderson email Eric.Anderson@uconn.edu
Vice-Commodore: Garrett Norton email gnorton@oceantugbarge.com
Treasurer: Chris Titcomb email magichat4@hotmail.com
Secretary:   Rick Bliss email nacra138@mediaone.net

There will be a fleet meeting in the spring on March 23.  Everyone is invited.  Call or email for more info.

Dues

NENSA/fleet 154   dues  for 2002 are $25.  With your dues, you will receive a $5 discount off the Sakonnet Challenge and the New England 100.  You also will receive a NENSA T-shirt and several NENSA bumper stickers.   At the end of this Newsletter is the application form for dues.   If you sail a NACRA, Prindle or Inter, you should be a NENSA Member.   No one is discouraging you from joining other fleets in your area, but you should also belong to NENSA.  Crews are welcome to join.

In addition to NENSA, if you are going to race you should consider joining US Sailing, Performance Catamaran Class Association and NAHCA.  NAHCA is the North American Hobie Cat Class Association.  This is the national governing body for Division 12, under which we race.  Membership in NAHCA saves you $5 per regatta and costs $25 per year.   With NAHCA membership you will receive a yearly calendar and monthly magazine.  It is expected that anyone who races more than1 regatta per year should be a NAHCA member.  If you plan on sailing in the Alter Cup qualifiers, you and your crew must be US Sailing members.   With your subscription to US Sailing you also get a years subscription to Sailing World magazine, current rulebook, and other goodies.

Performance Nationals

This year’s combined Nacra/Prindle/Inter Nationals are scheduled for September 8-12 in Michigan.   This is an annual event that moves around to different parts of the country.   Michigan is 12-15 hours from New England so should be an easy drive for all. The costs for an event like this are usually very reasonable.  If you have never been to a Nationals, I urge you to attend.  Nationals are a chance to meet, sail against and party with sailors from across the country.  Usually a broad range of skill levels from world class to intermediate sailors attend.  More details will be available later.

Hyannis Regatta.

The Nacra 6.0NA class elected to sail this years Hyannis Regatta.  This is a 3-day event July 26-28. (Friday-Sunday).  We decided to attend this event to raise awareness of catamaran racing at a large Monohull Regatta.  WE NEED MAXIMUM PARTICIPATION FROM THE FLEET.  We need to have a 15-20 boat showing at this event if we are going to promote the class.  More details and registration forms will be forthcoming.

NACRA 6.0 Class Spinnaker

The Nacra 6.0 class has been moving towards a 1-design spinnaker.  So far the results with the spinnaker have been very good.  The chute has proven to be very fast under most racing conditions.   Rick was first to the beach and first overall in the NE 100 this year, a class chute was first to the beach on the second day of the Newport 100, and second and 4th  to the beach in the Stature of Liberty Race.  Having sailed the chute for a year now, I feel it performs very well.  If you are going to purchase one, it is cheaper to get it through Rick bliss then to buy it directly.  There will be a Nacra 6.0 +class chute class at the New England 100 as well as the Around the Island race.   A significant portion of the fleet will be running the spinnakers with snuffers.

Providence Boat Show

New England Catamarans sponsored a booth at the Providence Boat show.  Rick displayed a Nacra 6.0.  NENSA provided a brochure promoting the fleet and racing in New England.  Rick Bliss Chris Titcomb, and Eric Anderson manned the booth at various times.    Hopefully we will get some new members from the show.
